trum f ¨ ur K ¨ unstliche Intelligenz, DFKI) with sites in Kaiserslautern and Saarbrücken is a non-profit organization which was founded in 1988. The shareholder com-search projects conducted at the DFKI are funded by the German Ministry for Research and Technology, by the shareholder companies, or by other industrial contracts. The DFKI conducts application-oriented basic research in the field of artificial intelligence and other related subfields of computer science. The overall goal is to construct systems with technical knowledge and common sense which-by using AI methods-implement a problem solution for a selected application area. Currently, there are the following research areas at the DFKI: The DFKI strives at making its research results available to the scientific community. There exist many contacts to domestic and foreign research institutions, both in academy and industry. The DFKI hosts technology transfer workshops for shareholders and other interested groups in order to inform about the current state of research. From its beginning, the DFKI has provided an attractive working environment for AI researchers from Germany and from all over the world. The goal is to have a staff of about 100 researchers at the end of the building-up phase. c Deutsches Forschungszentrum für K ¨ unstliche Intelligenz 1992 This work may not be copied or reproduced in whole of part for any commercial purpose. Abstract Two-literal clauses of the form L R occur quite frequently in logic programs, deductive databases, and|disguised as an equation|in term rewriting systems. These clauses deene a cycle if the atoms L and R are weakly uniiable, i.e., if L uniies with a new variant of R. The obvious problem with cycles is to control the number of iterations through the cycle. In this paper we consider the cycle uniication problem of unifying two literals G and F modulo a cycle. We review the state of …

Identifying Commonalities and Differences in Object Life Cycles Using Behavioral Inheritance

The behavioral-inheritance relations of [7, 8] can be used to compare the life cycles of objects de ned in terms of Petri nets. They yield partial orders on object life cycles (OLCs). Based on these orders, we de ne concepts such as the greatest common divisor and the least common multiple of a set of OLCs. These concepts have practical relevance: In component-based design, work ow management, ...

Unifying Voting Theory Results from Nakamura’s to Greenberg’s Theorems

Cycles, empty cores, intransitivities, and other complexities affect group decision and voting rules. Approaches to prevent these difficulties include the Nakamura number, Greenberg’s theorem, and single peaked preferences. A simple, common explanation why these seemingly dissimilar conclusions hold, and new general results that significantly extend these assertions are developed.

Toward a Unifying Framework for Defining Internal Human Resource Flexibility: A Proposal Based on the Resource- Based View Approach

Tendencies such as the increasing spread of market globalization, new technological developments, the reduction of product life cycles and aggressive competition, are generating high levels of environmental changes and uncertainty for organizations of all types (Volberda, 1996; Sanchez, 1997). These circumstances require rapid responses through adaptations of organizational attitudes and capabi...

Dynamic Equilibria in Wage Bargaining with Quantitative Evidence

This paper considers dynamic equilibria in wage bargaining unifying for the …rst time the models of Coles and Wright (1998) and Pissarides and producing in contrast to the Coles and Wright model, a non-de…cient equilibrium. In sharp contrast to the Pissarides model we analyse a fully dynamic model with non-linear cost functions and risk-averse agents with empirical/quantitative evidence also fo...

Unifying DAGs and UGs

We introduce a new class of graphical models that generalizes Lauritzen-Wermuth-Frydenberg chain graphs by relaxing the semi-directed acyclity constraint so that only directed cycles are forbidden. Moreover, up to two edges are allowed between any pair of nodes. Specifically, we present local, pairwise and global Markov properties for the new graphical models and prove their equivalence. We als...
